Barro Negro

Barro negro is a traditional style of clay that dates back centuries and unique to Oaxaca, Mexico. It is black due to its natural properties of clay. Historically used to make utility objects like cantaro, cups, jars, plates, or alajeros (jewelry holders). The process is laborious - finished goods can take up to 2 months! This includes preparation of the clay, hand shaping, molding, drying, polishing, carving decorations, and then heated underground firepits or kilns that reach 700-800 degrees Celsius.
